What to Know About Naturalization Ceremonies in New York City

Obtaining citizenship is an incredibly exciting experience, one that should be celebrated. One of the last steps of the naturalization process is a naturalization ceremony. Read on to learn more about the importance of naturalization ceremonies, what you will need to bring, what you can expect, and more.

There are two types of naturalization ceremonies. This includes the administrative ceremony and the judicial ceremony. You will be required to take the Oath of Allegiance at either ceremony. The difference between the two is that at the administrative ceremony, USCIS will administer the Oath, while a court will do so at the judicial ceremony.

While it is possible for there to be ceremonies available immediately after your interview, you will most likely not have your naturalization ceremony on the same day. In these cases, you will receive a letter from USCIS including the time, date, and location of the ceremony. If you are unable to attend the ceremony on the designated date, you can return the notice to USCIS with a written explanation of why as well as a request for a new date. This will not impact the process, but it is important to know that if you change the date more than once, your application may be denied.

When arriving at the ceremony, the first thing you must do is check in with USCIS, providing a USCIS officer with your answers to the questionnaire, Form N-445, Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony. After this, you will return your Permanent Resident Card, as you will no longer need it once you receive your Certificate of Naturalization after taking the Oath. It is important that you review your Certificate of Naturalization upon receiving it to ensure there are no errors, as you will now use this certificate as proof of your U.S. citizenship.

After taking the Oath you can receive the Certificate of Naturalization. Once granted citizenship in the United States, you are entitled to a variety of benefits. This includes applying for passports, voting in elections, updating your Social Security records, and more.
